Change of guards in Toastmasters Clubs (Sarawak Tribune, Tuesday, July 2, 2002)
KUCHING - About 120 Toastmasters in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, gathered at a leading hotel in Kuching on Saturday night to jointly bid farewell to the Club Officers for the 2001/2002 term and to welcome the officers for the new 2002/2003 term. The Toastmasters' new term of office starts on July 1 every year and ends on June 30 the following year.
Datu Dr. Yusoff Haji Hanifah, patron of the Kuching Toastmasters Club was the guest of honour at the function. He commended the performance of all the 10 Toastmasters Clubs in Kuching.
He urged members to seek continuous and never ending improvement to become better communicators.
Besides all the club presidents, present at the gathering were the District 51 Governor for 2002/2003 Dr John Lau, Lieutenant Governor Education & Training Ho Fong Ming from Kuala Lumpur, Lieutenant Governor Marketing Gea Ban Peng from Singapore, District Public Relations Officer Tan Cho Huat, District Secretary Dr. Arulnathan, District Treasurer Sakura Brigid Kong, Division E Governor Lawrence Tay, Area Governors Ting Men Choon and Chhoa Kim Hock, District Special Project Chair Dunstan Chan, District Speechcraft Chair William Lau, District Webmasters Thomas Yun and Alan Gwee and District Administrative Officer LeAnn Tang.
District Governor John encouraged the Toastmasters to bring out their best, to do their best and be the best. The District 51 theme for 2002/2003 is Dare To Excel.
He highlighted that the top priority of the term would be to strengthen the membership of all the clubs and to expand the network of clubs throughout the District. District 51 will charter 73 new clubs in the new term.
Later, John led the District Officers to launch the District 51 home page. District 51 Toastmasters International has 308 Toastmasters Clubs located in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei. Hong Kong and Macao. The home page address is http://www.district51online.com. The launching was witnessed by Datu Dr. Yusoff.
Earlier in the day, all the club officers in Areas E1, E4 and E6 attended a District sponsored club officers' training.
It is a practice in Toastmasters to train all the club leaders to better understand their roles and responsibilities.
